So sad

Today is my final class with Raf. It's been a good three years at Mohawk in the creative advertising program and I'm sad to say that it is almost over. Thanks for all the help and direction, it's been fun.

different

I like the approach that Leo Burnett took for Fiat. This car is different from the regular cars because it is an eco friendly one. I like how you don't know that it is an ad for a car until you see the small car in the bottom right. It is settle but does not go unnoticed. I also like the headline: "A weekend at home can be more dangerous than one in the jungle. 'Get out of the world you live in."' It makes me want to change my habits. Good job Leo Burnett.

developed

I finally saw the new Subway commercial where the monkey figures out the equation. The idea of even a monkey knowing that Subway's subs are the best value and best tasting was developed more and they now make it more clear. I like this commercial better then the first sets.

too settle?

The Subway ads that show the subs and then the monkey seemed like they could have been thought out a little more. The message of even a monkey can figure out that Subways subs are the best value and the best tasting may have been to settle. After asking a few friends if they got that message, they said no. They just thought that a random animal was picked for the ads.
I like the idea behind the ads, it just need to be pushed more.

bad

Friday the 13th... got to love it. It's sad to say that today is my last Friday the 13th in this house (which is house number 13) I have to admit, I am a little sad.

So before I write my blog of the day, I always go back and read what I wrote the day before. Today when I did this, I realized that I am brutal. Ads tend to grow on me and the more I look at the hot line of ketchup, the more I like the idea.
Sometimes all you need is time.

really?

Really?!? Ad of the week according to Lurzer's Archive. I don't agree with this. It doesn't make me what to go buy Heinz chili ketchup. The art direction is good, and I realize that the line of ketchup is a thermometer, but something is missing for me. Maybe it will grow on me. I don't know.

funny

The client for this ad is John West Salmon and is the classic spot of the week for Lurzer's Archive. This is some good fishing. lol. I love it, simply funny. Good job Leo Burnett.

you can do this?!?

This is crazy, I didn't know you could make a transit shelter so interactive. This is amazing. I would play this forever and probably miss my bus a few times. My favourite chocolate with a new idea. You have to check this out- Crazy cool.

I like

I like this ad because its simple, straight to the point and the layouts is good. I also like how the logo is in use and not just sitting in the corner.
Well done.

Sunday, February 8, 2009

yumm

Love this chocolate and these ads, they are cute and funny. They just make me want one even more. mmmm, I love Easter. Newtons Cradle
Mouse trap.

soon to come

Hopefully in two weeks, I'll be blogging about how stressed I am working at an agency with tight deadlines and wounding why in the world I would put myself through so much stress. Main point- hopefully working!

fly by

WOW! Two weeks left of a 3 year program. This fly by. It seems like only yesterday I was sitting on a bench at high school wondering what the hell I was going to do with my life. Now I'm two weeks away from something that I had never expected. I always knew that I had to do something with art and design but I never would have guessed that I would be in Hamilton at Mohawk studying Advertising. It's been an amazing 3 years with different people and new friends. Its defiantly going to be another major change when school is done. I have no idea where I'll be in 3 years. Hopefully some big agency somewhere in the world working with inspiring chief directors. Hmm, maybe :).

weird thing

So I never would have thought that someone out of my class would ever be reading my blogs, however after posting my two ads about underwear, I was contacted by the interactive marketing manager stating that their upcoming campaign is going to be around the same concept. Crazy, but I guess it's good that Michelle and I were thinking in the right direction.

SUCK A DUCK

Apparently vacuums suck more than dirt these days; they can catch you dinner too. Which is convenient because I hate chasing my food.

Overall, I think this would make a good investment. The ad really sold me on this one. Guess they got me again.

just in case

This year's client for the IMC campaign is Freshpair. For this project I worked with Michelle and we developed the "mom always said, wear a freshpair- just in case" idea.  To the right is the mall poster that I  like the most, and below is my favourite newspaper ad.
Yay Michelle... almost done!!

wow

So I've realized that I haven't had much to say in the last few blogs and I feel like I should be writing more for today, but this billboard is so clever, it doesn't need an explanation. Time for McDonalds!

great guerrilla ad

This is a great guerrilla piece. The guys who actually saw this probably had way to much fun with it, but its smart and interactive.

it got my attention

This ad is a great ad, because it's believable and makes me want to adopt a dog. Love the copy and the art direction is very well done, with great use of the logo.

twitter

what is twitter? why do you use twitter? I  have no idea but my account is dinga1. Check it out!

Strategic. Simple. Scrabble.
Can't get to the point faster.

ahh big sale- hide

All I have to say is "love it" and it's funny because shopping during a big sale is scary, you have to defend yourself.

sweet poster

Today while searching ihaveanidea.org, I found a crazy poster. It speaks for itself. Amazing DDB! The copy reads "Every image has a sound".

T Mobile

So I was reading the Advertising Age newsletter and I found the new T Mobile spot. When I watched it, I was very intrigued. At first I was wondering what was going to happen and I love how the people just broke out into dance, then at the end how they just all walk away on their cell phones. Love it!

another great transit

This transit ad got my attention right away. It looks like he is actually living in that  shelter. I also like how the logo isn't placed in the bottom right corner. Good art direction.

Crazy transit

This transit ad is amazing. I love how it is interactive and used the entire shelter.
I can't upload the picture for some reason, so click the link to see what I'm talking about.

clever

This billboard is very clever. Its very simple, gets to the point, and you get it right away.
Love it!

best commercial

This is the best commercial ever... very well done and it stays in your head.

projects

This year is the first year that the business side and the creative side work hand in hand to complete a a full campaign with all the creative and media work. So far I've noticed that both teams need to have meetings a lot to make sure everyone meets the deadline. It is harder than just getting a breif and being sent to work, but I enjoy it. I can't wait to start working :).

New Advertising

This week my roomates ordered pizza from Limeridge and when it was delivered, half of a blue football was printed at the top of the box. Centred on the pizza box is a big square box of copy that explaines that pizza is only as great as the toppings, just like how your T.V is only as good as the service that you use, so get Bell HD and get ready for the super bowl.
This is the first time I've seen this and I love that something other then the pizza company is now advertisied on the box. I find it very clever and effictive.

The third one's the charm

By being very successful with the last two competitions that Katey and I entered, we had high hopes for the CMA's along with two new additions: Steph and Mary. The CMA's were more of a challenge since we had to create a direct mail piece for the Final Expense Plan. The target market for this piece is completely different then what we are used to and we found it very difficult to advertise life insurance and target people who are 55-60 years old. It took us about two weeks before the "big idea": the fear of crossing a bridge was thought of and from then on, everything just fell into place.
This project was the most challenging project I have worked on but it was worth the long hours of writing copy, printing and mounting.
Going to the CMA award show was amazing. I love watching all the hottest ads with the brightest ideas, seeing the gowns that looked like they belonged at the oscars and of course my highlight of the night was receiving the gold :).

Award #2

The second competition that Katey Sue and I entered was the ADCC. The client was Bell and they were looking for a new image that would appeal to both females and males 20- 25 years old. There had to be a magazine, a billboard and a 30 second T.V commercial.
Katey Sue and I brainstormed a lot for this campaign to get it right but that was nothing compared to the endless hours it took to create the executions. In the end, I loved creating this campaign and watching it all come together. The image in the top right is the magazine. The road reads what bell connects you to: your friends, your family, your life, your connection and much more.

first award

The first competition that Katey Sue and I entered was the AEAC. The client was Umbra and we arrived at the school for 9am. We were breifed my Raf and Judy (our teachers), and were told we had eight hours to develop an idea, executed two magazine ads, two newspaper ads, a transit, non-traditional, and a splashpage.
The image to the left is one of the magazine executions (to see the others, visit my online portfolio).
Our idea was to show the products like works of art because of Umbra's modern design and we finished before the deadline.
After five months of wondering how we did, we found out that we had won our first award. So exciting.

terrified

So I am two weeks into my last seven week semester, and I have not found an internship yet. In six weeks I have to be working at an ad agency and I have no idea where I'll be. I am so terrified that I won't be working due to the economy. However this seven week work placement will not be paid so it should make my chances to get my foot into the advertising world a little bit easier. I have also won 3 awards with my school partner Katey Sue: a gold for the AEAC awards, a merit for the ADCC, and a gold for the CMA awards. With the economy and the awards, hopefully in two to three weeks I will be back on here screaming with excitement about how I just landed my internship.

McDonald's Commercial

The new McDonald's commercial with the two dads is contently on. I wasn't going to write about them, but they are always playing and I can't get them out of my head. Why would McDonald's have a commercial about two dad's complaining about their new born baby's crying. I know I'm not the target audience for this commercial but it drives me nuts. Every parent experiences the painful cries of their child, but how in the world does a double cheeseburger help them. Yes the father's are getting some alone time, but I don't understand why they would go to McDonald's for their alone time and complain.
McDonald's is putting their advertising in a new direction, but I don't believe that this is the way to go.

portfolio

Today I set up my online portfolio at "Something to Share". Like my regular portfolio, I will be touching up the layout and flow of the website. The process of setting up this online display was easier then what I had expected. It only took me minutes to get everything up but I have to rearrange which could take some time :S
Hopefully this will make it easier to make my way to Montreal!!

finally left Canada

So my deep dark secret is that I have only left Ontario a few times. The first time was when I was a kid, my brother played hockey and had a tournament in the states. The second time was this summer when I went to Montreal and fell in love with the culture and the city.
However, I took advantage of a great opportunity to go to New York in December and loved it. It's a great city that I will have to visit again. One of the best things there was the advertising, I love how the ads are everywhere, it feel more like art. I also noticed how the billboards are so much bigger, it seems so unrealistic but amazing.
Hopefully someday I'll get to go to NYC on business and see a whole different side to it.

aftermath

I still thought about the lush flavour of new 5 gum commercial, so I went onto you tube to see how the other flavours were executed. The other flavours continued with "how it feels to chew new5 gum", and got the idea across. They are very interesting because of the dark and mysterious approch of advertising gum.

Saturday, January 10, 2009

commercial of the day

The commercial that stayed with me today is the new 5 commercial for the lush flavour. This commercial caught my attention right away with the dark setting and the cute man. It keeps my attention by showing a new way to experience the exciting flavour.
I like the idea of the commercial and it was executed very good.

shamwow

Shamwow, you'll be saying wow every time. This commercial drives me nuts. Wow!
After seeing this commercial a few times, my roommate went our and bought one just to see if it worked. She poured water on our new carpet and enacted the whole commercial, down to showing me that all the water she just pored on the carpet drained all back into the glass.
Sadly to say, this commercial does work because it gets people excited about the product and drives to go buy it and use it.

stuck

So today, the one ad that I couldn't get out of my head is the new tim hortons billboards of the fresh pot of coffee. These ads are straight to the point and stuck in my head. After seeing this ad, all I could think about was that the pot has 20 miniuts to live and that when I would finally get my timmies, that it would be fresh and delicious.
Good advertising!

Montreal?

Montreal is a highly creative city with so much inspiration and culture to offer.
There are currently two agencies that have really caught my attention: Taxi - Montreal and Sid Lee. Both agencies have great clients and concepts and give off a high energy and excitement level.
By moving to Montreal, I would not only learn from the agency that I would be working at, but I'd learn a whole new culture and a life that I couldn't experience in Toronto.
With cousins that live in Montreal, the question is no longer what Montreal offers me, but what I can offer Montreal.

world of oppertunity

Advertising is my world of opportunity.
It's my way of sharing my art and my idea's with the world.
It's my way of taking my love for design and making it my work.
In 8 weeks I will be working for an agency with big clients and even bigger ideas.
Advertising is my world of opportunity that is taking this small town girl and bringing her to the big city...
but where?!?
Toronto or Montreal?
